Responsible for the management, development, training and motivation of the design teams in one or more Design Centers, while maintaining a high level of customer contact and achieving sales goals. Actively coach design team associates to raise professionalism of the design services.  

District Design Manager will be evaluated on quarterly basis for performance in the following areas:  net written sales in excess of base and budgeted, return ratios, gross margin, inventory and business development.


  • Follow Ethan Allen’s Leadership Principles and
    • Embrace, support and implement change initiatives.
    • Develop successful working relationships with all staff and hold them accountable to meet or exceed established sales budgets and benchmarks.
    • Work to retain and develop talent while reducing regrettable turnover.
    • Ensure that district has solid bench strength and succession plan.
    • Conduct needs assessment and create/deliver training for management and assist them with the development of their team(s).
  • Drive new business and increase sales by developing marketing initiatives, including but not limited to:
    • Partnering with local business/organizations, and related business prospects to obtain potential client lists and recommending Ethan Allen as a source for new purchases.
    • Continuing to identify opportunities to establish Ethan Allen as a leader in design and home furnishings.
    • Developing additional IDA & EARRP memberships through professional affiliations and managing the IDA & EARRP Programs insuring local associates provide consistent service to IDA & EARRP members.
  • Represent Ethan Allen’s products and programs honestly and professionally while managing associates to provide design solutions and to achieve or exceed sales goals.
  • Use Social Media such as blogs, micro-blogs, online forums, content sharing websites, and other digital channels established for online interaction and connection to promote Ethan Allen as outlined in Ethan Allen’s Social Media Policy.
  • Provide Ethan Allen’s clients with style, quality, value, service and solutions as outlined in the Ethan Allen Service Standards, as amended.
  • Operate according to the Ethan Allen Standards of Operation, as amended.
  • Improve gross profit margins, reduce rate of returns, manage inventory, and increase profitability.
  • Develop, train and motivate design associates to provide optimal customer service and increase productivity while working in a positive team environment.
  • Keep current on industry trends.


  • Responsible for the overall management and supervision of staff at assigned design centers.
  • Follow operational policies and procedures to ensure fiscal control, security of company assets, inventory management and design center safety. Ensure that all policies are communicated to staff and posted as required.
  • Ensure brand projection in each design center is consistent with policy guidelines.
  • Evaluate and provide direction for associate performance in accordance with company policy. Provide constructive feedback to all associates including daily interaction and timely completion of annual performance reviews. 
  • Work with District Design Manager and/or human resources to consistently implement disciplinary action and performance management in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Ensure adherence to all company policies such as Code of Conduct policies, workplace harassment, sexual harassment, discrimination and/or retaliation.
  • Maintain a locked and confidential personnel file on all employees.
  • Manage the design associates to increase the overall performance of the Design Center/Studio.
  • Effectively manage customer contacts and relationships to improve customer service, improve designer effectiveness, and increase overall customer satisfaction.
  • Drive profitability within the assigned Design Centers by meeting or exceeding benchmarks for returns, gross margin, and new business development as well as increase sales volume for all of Ethan Allen’s products (case goods, upholstery, softgoods, and accents).
  • Maintain clear lines of communication with the District Design Manager on sales, performance issues and customer service.
  • Accountable to achieve sales goals through the development, training and coaching of all associates. This includes coaching and training staff in the areas of minimum monthly sales, as well as other benchmarks such as home calls, accents and softgoods sales, be-backs, close ratio’s and IDA sales.
  • Responsible for the recruitment and hiring of all associates within the design center.
  • Evaluate design consultants’ performance using such tools as the Designer Performance System. Create action plans as necessary to support performance improvement.
  • Foster a team environment that expedites the closing of design projects.
  • Create and nurture a positive team environment that contributes to staff retention.
  • Participate in design projects when necessary, including interacting with customers, to ensure the customer’s design needs are achieved.
  • Utilize corporate systems, technology and training to maximize efficiency in designing projects, creating presentations and providing professional service.
  • Conduct group and one-on-one strategy meetings with all design team associates and create timely action plans as necessary.
  • Remain current on design and color trends to create fashionable design solutions.
  • Represent Ethan Allen, at all times and under any circumstances, in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Job Requirements


Education/Experience:  A minimum of ten years, combined, practical interior design experience and interior design education, two or four year degree, from an accredited institution and eligible for CQRID or NCIDQ certification.  Proven sales background in residential interior design.   Broad knowledge of interior design and effective sales techniques.  Supervisory experience required. BA or BS degree in Business preferred.

Other Requirements:    An entrepreneurial attitude and approach with strong communication and organizational skills.  This position requires team leadership and the ability to manage the design process including the ability to review and provide feedback on design projects using technical and creative skills in color and space planning.  Demonstrated ability to practice residential interior design and sales techniques.  Ability to train and coach for design, product knowledge, sales performance and customer service.  Must be able to work holidays, evenings and weekends.  Position requires a valid driver’s license, except in limited circumstances in which the associate can establish to the Company’s satisfaction that they have available for use during all business hours an alternate means of transportation not requiring the operation of a motor vehicle which will enable them to perform the duties of their position.
